Bharti Wal-Mart, a joint venture between Bharti Enterprises and US-based retail giant Wal-Mart stores, would commence its wholesale operations by early next year from the northern region, Bharti Wal-Mart CEO and Managing Director Raj Jain said at a CII conference. To facilitate operations, Bharti Wal-Mart has set up a distribution centre of hundred thousand square feet in Banaur near Chandigarh.

Whereas Bharti Wal-Mart is a venture for wholesale business which would provide products to small retailers and kirana stores, Bharti Retail will operate own food and grocery stores. The first three stores had been launched recently under the brand name 'Easy Days' in Ludhiana, Punjab. Easy Day is positioned as a neighbourhood format store. The company also seems to have plans for bigger formats like hypermarkets, but has nothing announced to far.

Wal-Mart has tied up with Indian company Bharti Enterprises to set up a cash & carry business and franchised retailing as foreign retailers are not yet allowed to invest in Indian retail operations. Cash & carry (wholesale) on the other side, has been allowed some years back, and Metro from Germany is very active since then in India.
