A leading business paper in Europe has reported that number one global beer brewer, Belgian brewer InBev, would be trying to take over Anheuser-Busch, USA, the number two in the global beer market.

Inbev would be considering a friendly as well as a so called unfriendly deal, if Anheuser-Busch would resist. August Busch IV, the Anheuser chief executive, is said to have resisted an informal bid from InBev already last October.

Alternatively, InBev, which is trying to strengthening its global market position, could tie up with SABMiller. There would have been informal discussions already, but which have been delayed in the light of the US Department of Justice’s review of SABMiller’s deal to merge its US operations with those of Molson Coors, it was reported.

If the first deal of InBev acquiring Anheuser-Busch would go through, then Inbev would gain control of about 25% of the world’s beer market.

Especially the second option of a deal - InBev plus SABMiller - would have effects also on the Indian beer market, where Heinken is positioning itself to get market share in a beer market dominated so far by United Breweries (Kingfisher). InBev is present in India since May 2007 through a joint venture called InBev India International with Pepsi filler RKJ Group and plans to offer its German Löwenbräu beer in the Indian market. SABMiller is the number two in the Indian market.
