Global supermarket chains such as Wal-Mart,Tesco, Carrefour and Metro may be sourcing Indian fruit and vegetables if a government proposal of quality certification and cold chain network gets going.

The ministry of food processing is understood to have made a proposal to this effect. Quality check and certification would begin at the farm level by the respective state governments who will monitor the cold chains as well. The fruit and vegetables can be shipped to any European or U.S. city within 2/3 days.

The ministry is said to be talking to the US-based Dole Co, a world leader in operating cold chains, to develop large cold chains in India. The ministry also plans to set up research, product testing and grading laboratories.

Indian exporters enjoy substantial price advantage in the supply of food products and raw material to retail chains in developed countries. The cost advantage of Indian food farm produce has been estimated at up to 35% since farm gate prices are cheaper in India.

The success of mango and apple export as also that of flowers has enthused the government to export other fruit and vegetables in a big way.
