METRO Cash & Carry India Private Limited, a subsidiary of Germany-based Metro AG, has decided to invest US$ 180 million for setting up 6 wholesale centers in different locations in Northern Indian state of Punjab like Ludhiana and Jalandhar by 2010, media have reported.

The new centers would not be only be involved in cash-and -carry operations, but would also be the sourcing hub of local produce for the domestic and international sales network of Metro. Sourcing for export is already done by a sourcing company Metro operates since a few years in Delhi from where food and non-food categories are sourced from India. Metro sees here for example huge opportunities in frozen sea-food and cashew nuts.

One task would be to identify the vendors who want to become international suppliers and the products that have the potential. "India will become one of our global sourcing hubs", says Martin Dlouhy, managing director of Metro Cash & Carry India Private Limited. "Our duty is to help the supplier succeed since we know which export markets to look at, we can provide him processes support", he says.
