20th April saw New Zealand High Commission, New Delhi, hosting a grand get-together to welcome a big delegation of New Zealand food and beverage companies visiting India. A group of 13 New Zealand food producers and wineries are at present in India, sponsored by Australia and New Zealand Banking Corporation Limited (ANZ).

The highlight of the evening was Masterchef India judge Kunal Kapur, who held the open kitchen provided by Fisher and Paykel, New Zealand’s Award Winning Home and Kitchen Appliances, for a cooking demonstration giving the taste of delectable New Zealand culinary.

Masterchef judge Kunal Kapur recently toured New Zealand as the recipient of the annual Sir Edmund Hillary Fellowship, awarded to a high-profile Indian. Chef Kapur was able to learn more about New Zealand’s world-leading food production industry and is now sharing his favourite ways to cook New Zealand food in India.

“We are excited to bring a variety of New Zealand food and beverage companies to India in partnership with ANZ. Indians are already enjoying high quality, safe and delicious products from our country and we are looking forward to sharing more in the future,” says Richard White, New Zealand’s Trade Commissioner to New Delhi.

Subhas DeGamia, CEO India, ANZ added, “India is already New Zealand’s seventh largest market. New Zealand’s reputation for high quality coupled with the rising demand in India for specialty foods and cuisine augurs well for both countries”.

Emphasizing the need for a long-term view and understanding the nuances of doing business in India, he re-iterated, “For New Zealand companies, trusted partners and advisors on the ground are key to accelerate their speed to market in India." ANZ is engaged closely with New Zealand Trade & Enterprise who is playing a very active role in facilitating this, he explained.

The visit comes as Indian consumers are enjoying a greater variety of New Zealand food and beverage products including exports of 100% Pure New Zealand apples, which provide counter-seasonal supply to India’s domestic stocks. Apples now make up 38 percent of New Zealand’s food exports to India, and grew 73 percent last year on the back of increasing consumer demand.

New Zealand growers are also partnering with their Indian counterparts to strengthen Indian apple production.

Similarly, many Indians are discovering New Zealand’s internationally recognised wines are a perfect match for local cuisine. Exports of New Zealand wine to India grew 16 percent in 2012.

The ANZ sponsored delegation led by Sunil Kaushal, Head of India Relations, ANZ New Zealand, was in India from 19 April to 27 April and visiting Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.
